Understanding Custom Cakes
Buttercream or Fondant? Sugar flowers or fresh? Round tiers or square? The choices are endless when it comes to your cake, which means things can get a bit overwhelming. To make sure you get the confection of your dreams, it’s important to understand the basics about custom cakes.
Size and Tiers
The first thing to decide is the size of the cake i.e. how many kgs the cake will weigh. This depends on how many people will be at the event and how many servings will be needed.
In addition, there are many different sizes and dimensions to choose from. For example, you could have a square cake, a round cake or a uniquely designed shape.
It is important to remember that the more tiers in a design the more the amount of cake. For example, even a small two tier cake will be at least 4 kgs.
The cake or sponge flavor is critical in defining the overall taste of the cake. Since we make our cakes from scratch, we can customize the flavor of your cake to your preference. Our most popular choices are traditional white cake, traditional chocolate cake, red velvet cake and carrot cake.
The filling flavor is just as important as the cake flavor. In addition, you want to make sure that the two are compatible.
There is a wide variety of fillings you can choose from. Popular frosting flavors are traditional vanilla buttercream and chocolate buttercream.
We make our filling from scratch and can customize the filling to your palette.
Your options for flavors, appearance, cost, accessories and decorations are all affected by the type of frosting you choose. As a general rule, there are three types of frostings to choose from:
Butter Cream is your basic birthday cake frosting. It tastes great and is inexpensive. However, it is impossible to get the smooth look that is so popular these days and it is not recommended for hot environments. Also, you cannot have fancy models made from this, therefore, the design tends to be quite basic.
Ganache is the traditional chocolate based frosting. It also tastes great. While it is more expensive than butter cream, it is cheaper than fondant. You can’t get intricate designs with ganache but you can supplement the cake design with live flowers. Like butter cream, ganache does not respond well to heat. Ganache has a comparably short shelf life.
Fondant is a baker’s play dough. It is used in ultra-hip wedding and birthday cakes. It can be used to make very creative designs. You dream it, we will build it :). It is expensive in comparison to butter cream and ganache.
Fondant is the least tasty of the frosting options. However, fondant cakes will have a layer of ganache or butter cream under it. Therefore, guests can remove the fondant layer and enjoy the delicious cake within.
